17-text-llms: where the files in this folder came from
=======================================================

Open the folder with 17-text-llms.Rproj, so R starts here and the file
names in the slides work as written. Nothing in this folder needs a
network or an API key: the model replies are saved in replies/ and demo/.

fomc_statements.csv
-------------------
Every policy statement of the Federal Open Market Committee from
31 January 2006 to 16 September 2026: 171 rows, 165 after scheduled
meetings and 6 after unscheduled ones. Columns: date, url, words, text,
scheduled. Paragraphs inside text are separated by a blank line ("\n\n").
The text is as the Fed's pages show it, including the characters the pages
use that are not on a keyboard (the non-breaking hyphen, code point 8209,
curly apostrophes, en and em dashes).

Collected from federalreserve.gov in October 2026, the same file the
scraping session builds. Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System:
"Unless otherwise indicated, information on Board's website is in the
public domain and may be copied and distributed without permission. Please
cite to the Board as the source of the information."

fred_target_range.csv
---------------------
The federal funds target for every day from 1 January 2006 to
30 September 2026: 7,578 rows; columns date, lower, upper (percent).
To 15 December 2008 the Fed set one target, copied into both columns;
from 16 December 2008 it sets a range.

FRED, Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, downloaded 20 October 2026:
DFEDTAR Federal Funds Target Rate (DISCONTINUED), to 2008-12-15
    https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/DFEDTAR
DFEDTARL Federal Funds Target Range - Lower Limit, from 2008-12-16

DFEDTARU Federal Funds Target Range - Upper Limit, from 2008-12-16

Each was read from https://fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/fredgraph.csv?id=<id>.

lm_words.csv
------------
The positive and negative word lists of the Loughran-McDonald Master
Dictionary, in lower case: 2,692 rows, 347 positive and 2,345 negative;
columns word, list.

Loughran, Tim, and Bill McDonald. 2011. "When Is a Liability Not a
Liability? Textual Analysis, Dictionaries, and 10-Ks." Journal of
  Finance 66 (1): 35-65. https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1540-6261.2010.01625.x

Source file: Loughran-McDonald_MasterDictionary_1993-2025.csv, the
authors' update of March 2026, from
  https://sraf.nd.edu/loughranmcdonald-master-dictionary/
Terms, from that page: "The dictionary/sentiment lists are free for use in
academic research. For commercial licenses, please contact us at
loughranmcdonald@gmail.com." This file is shipped for academic teaching
use under those terms.

In the master file each word's Positive and Negative columns hold the year
the word was added to the list, and a negative year marks a word removed.
This file keeps the words whose year is above 0, so it leaves out the 17
removed words. The master dictionary has five more lists (uncertainty,
litigious, strong modal, weak modal, constraining) not used here.

tdw_sentences.csv
-----------------
2,480 sentences from documents of the Federal Open Market Committee, each
labelled by hand as dovish, hawkish or neutral: the Trillion Dollar Words
dataset.

Shah, Agam, Suvan Paturi, and Sudheer Chava. 2023. "Trillion Dollar
Words: A New Financial Dataset, Task & Market Analysis." Proceedings of
the 61st Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics,
  6664-6679. https://doi.org/10.18653/v1/2023.acl-long.368
  Dataset: https://huggingface.co/datasets/gtfintechlab/fomc_communication
  Licence: CC BY-NC 4.0, https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/

Downloaded 25 October 2026 (train.csv, 1,984 rows; test.csv, 496 rows).
Columns: id, sentence, year, label, split, orig_index. label: 0 dovish,
1 hawkish, 2 neutral, from the dataset's README.
Changes made: the two files are combined, train first; id (1 to 2,480) and
split (train or test) are added; the column index is dropped and
orig_index kept; 44 sentences whose characters were damaged by a
wrong text encoding ("—" for a dash, "’" for an apostrophe) are
repaired. Nothing else is changed, including the year column, which ships
as released.

statement_sentences.csv
-----------------------
The 171 statements of fomc_statements.csv cut into 2,540 sentences
(1,195 distinct), made by prep/build_sentences.R: paragraphs split at blank
lines, the paragraph listing how each member voted and the line giving the
vote dropped, sentences split after ".", "!" or "?" before a capital
letter, "St. Louis" kept whole, footnote markers dropped. Columns: id, sid
(one id per distinct sentence), date, sentence.

codebook.txt, range_prompt.txt, model_setup.R, save_replies.R, run_all.R, demo.R
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The two system prompts, written once before any reply was seen and never
edited after; codebook.txt condenses the annotation guide of Shah, Paturi
and Chava (Appendix C.2). The R files made every saved reply; they need
ellmer and an API key. See README.txt.

replies/, demo/
---------------
Every model reply, saved when it arrived. See README.txt for the model,
the run dates, the calls and the tokens.
